Our spring luncheon has been announced for Thursday, April 8th at the Danforth Inn in Portland from 12-2p. The cost is $19 and includes food (yummy brunch and dessert) and drink (pomegranate punch!), tax and tip. We must give a final headcount and pay by Monday, April 5th at 12 noon.

contest for new photographers

Safely home and mind spinning from WPPI, the grande dame of wedding photography conventions in Las Vegas, I wanted to alert new photographers to an excellent contest announced there this week by Rangefinder Publishing and liveBooks called emerge.

Geared toward newer (er, emerging) photographers, the photography contest aims to help launch the careers of wedding industry newbies with stellar prizes: a one-year subscription to a liveBooks predesigned website, a one-year subscription to a Pictage account, a one-year subscription to a ShootQ account, a 2011 WPPI VIP pass, a Think Tank Photo belt and a $100 AsukaBook gift card. San Diego wedding photographer Jared Bauman will be stopping in Portland for a leg of his "Prevail in Business" tour on March 31st. Fall 09 GTG recap

What a fun night! Thanks to those of you who came out for a wine tasting with Jacques de Villier of Old Port Wine Merchants at Casco Bay Frames & Gallery in Portland.

For those who missed it, shop owner Tony Cox (seen in the picture below with us) chatted about the store's history (been in business for more than 30 years!), a bit about their employees (all are artists), their process (all pieces are custom framed) and showed us the finished result. Then it was back to wine learning and gabbing (Maine's election results as they relate to our business was top of mind), business card swapping and catching up after a busy regular wedding season.

Thanks for hosting, Tony, and for kindly giving gift certificates to us all. And to Jacques for rallying for us. We had a great night! See you ladies in the spring!

Fall gathering: Happy hour 11/5 5:30-7:30p

A lot has happened since we last got together. New women have joined our group, others have opened studios and a few have moved away. Most notable, however, we put our emergency network into practice assisting one of our members with coverage after the unexpected death of her husband. I can't thank each of you enough for your willingness to help, either with time or with donating towards funeral flowers and food. You make me proud and I'm honored to host such a caring group of talented individuals.

The importance of this group, worth repeating, is our ability to call on each other in emergencies, an avenue to meet & expand our referral base and to provide an easy face-to-face format for the sharing of ideas, and to support one another as likeminded women business owners.

In lieu of lunch this fall, let's toast the end of our wedding season with Tony and his team at Casco Bay Frames & Gallery to learn about their custom framing process and enjoy a wine tasting led by Jacques from Old Port Wine Merchants. Spouses and assistants are welcome.

Hi fellow photogs-
I wanted to let you know about an event happening Salt's gallery Thursday Sept 17th starting at 7pm. It is not wedding related, but definitely photography related.

Last winter, I was the Director of Photography for a project called www.Do1Thing.org. The goal of Do1Thing was to utilize the talent's of some of our country's best photographers and photojournalists to shed light on the issue of teen and young adult homelessness, especially in how it relates to those that 'age out' of foster care.

We currently have an exhibit up at Salt featuring the work of Martin Schoeller, Ron Haviv/VII, Judy DeHaas, Dan Dry, Carol Guzy, Stephanie Sinclair/VII, Larry Price, and many more! Many Pulitzer Prize winners were involved and their work is represented, they all donated their time and talents to the project.

While I was so proud to have the first show of the work at Salt, I was dismayed that Maine was not represented, so I've been working on a multi-media piece on a young woman named Lulu who is currently experiencing homelessness in Portland. There are currently 240 children between the ages of 14 and 20 being helped by the Preble Street Teen Center. Many of them sleep outside every night. I would love to see everyone from the Maine photo community there to support this issue and event. My subject, Lulu, and other kids being served by the Teen Center will be there. If you'd like to bring a small item to donate it will go directly to the kids, here are some things they need:

- new underwear (especially for females)
- towels
- feminine hygiene products
- art supplies
- razors (double blade) and shaving cream
- deodorant
- hotel sized shampoos, etc.
- socks, warm socks, big sizes too
- winter clothes, hats, gloves, etc.
- big winter jackets for layering under
- individual food portions, i.e. juice boxes, snack packs, bags of chips, etc.
- maternity clothes
- baby stuff
- xl and xxl sized clothes and shoes size 11 and up
